This new and ground-breaking 3 session course is available to all parents of children currently in year 6.
Designed to assist parents in managing the changes in behaviour and attitude that the teen and preteen years can bring and preparing their child - and themselves - for the challenges ahead including the transition to Secondary School.
The course is based on new understanding of the neurological changes in adolescence, the implications of these for behaviour and education and how to adapt the way children are parented in the pre teen years to make living with a teenager and helping them reach their full potential less challenging for the whole family.
The course is organised into 3 two-hour interactive workshop sessions each with a different but linked focus.
Session 1 – Preparing for the teen years
We now know that the changes in behaviour and attitude during adolescence are not caused by ‘hormones’ (although these can certainly contribute to mood change and increased aggression) they are caused by a major re-structuring of the brain which can result in whole aspects of a child’s personality or behaviour seeming to reverse or disappear almost overnight. Empathy, risk assessment, identifying outcomes, communication, allegiances and changing sleep patterns are just a few of the areas to undergo change. We’ll be looking at recent findings in adolescent neuro biology and the implications of these for your child.
Understanding and managing changes in
Session 2 – Behaviour management in the preteen years
We know that trying to establish new parenting behaviour during adolescence is frequently unsuccessful, so changes and expectations need to be made before the onset of adolescence so that these have time to become established and routine.
We will be looking at establishing best practice in
Session 3 – Supporting a smooth transition to secondary school
How well children transition to secondary school is seen as a broad indicator of future success both academically and socially.
Schools make every effort to induct pupils into their new environment and society. For parents there are many things that only they can do to help the transition go as smoothly as possible in the months leading up to the move.
We will explore the most common fears and concerns children have leading up to transition and how we can help the child overcome any concerns with confidence and honed skills. We’ll also be exploring what research tells us are the qualities, behaviours and attitudes that have been shown to lead to successful young people who are neither picked on by others or do the picking on, have good self esteem and work consistently to their ability level.
